I have not left my house in two days. TWO DAYS! There has been a ton of snow in my neck of the woods. Schools are closed, restaurants are closed, and gyms are closed (gasp)!
So, besides lounging around in my pajamas, doing a lot of pacing, and hanging out with a lot of flakes, I also squeezed in a few home workouts.
Lucky for me I have a few pieces of workout equipment to get me by on days when I just can’t make it to the gym. Here’s what I did yesterday…
4 sets of 9 reps of the following moves:
- A1 Single leg deadlifts
- A2 Barbell rows
- B1 Close grip push ups
- B2 Band rows
- C1 Alternating dumbbell shoulder presses
- C2 Crunches
- D1 Dumbbell hammer curls
- D2 Dumbbell reverse lunges on Valslides
And, speaking of Valslides, I have one more Valkit to giveaway! To enter the drawing simply tell me what you do when you have a case of cabin fever in the comments section below. Enter by 11:59 P.M. on Saturday, December 12th and the winner will be announced back here on Sunday.
Now I really must go get out of these pajamas and slide into some real clothes in case What Not To Wear decides to stop by.

Sue says:
December 10th 2009Oh geez. See, I NEVER get cabin fever. EVER. EVER EVER. I could live quite happily as a hermit I think. All of my workouts are home workouts, and I can go 2 days without leaving the house in the middle of summer and not even notice. If I didn’t have kids and a husband to push me out the door, a neighbor who asks me every day to take the babies for a walk, and an anxiety problem that I now know is better handled with long walks with some running intervals than medication or alcohol, I’d never leave my house. I think that makes me sound weird, but what can I say. I kind of am weird!

December 10th 2009Well I don’t have any really neat equipment, but I do have a band, and some 10 pound weights, and of course pilates and yoga videos! So I usually stick to the resistance workouts when I have cabin fever, and maybe do some high energy pilates dvds! Good for you for not letting the winter keep you from your workouts! It’s an excuse I hear all the time.
Susan says:
December 10th 2009The family plays Wii, cooks together, and have Cranium tournaments! It is rare that we are “stuck” inside so we relish the times!

December 10th 2009I usually do an exercise DVD and run on my treadmill. I’m thankful to have them as back ups for snow days. Also, I like to read a good book and eat some warm soup! Oh yeah, and I catch up on all my shows that I have on the DVR!

December 10th 2009Hi Joanna!!
I had to giggle when I read your post. I’m from Prince Edward Island, Eastern Canada and I know all about cabin fever this time of year!! We start getting hit with snowstorms and everything shuts down! My husband is home from work, I’m home from work, the kids stay home from school and EVERYTHING around us shuts down. The gym, the grocery stores and our satellite signal konks out so there’s not even tv to watch! What’s a person to do. ;)
It would be easy to say “Sit around the house and eat junk food”. At least that’s what the old me would do. Instead I do a workout in my basement. I make it a goal every year to try to add something new. I have a half of the kid’s playroom sectioned of as my gym area with motivational pictures and quotes on the wall. I hook my laptop up to some speakers and make it my own personal time to do a workout. Sometimes the kids join me by lifting little 2 lb weights I got them from Walmart. It’s a fun loving family experience and I always feel much better after doing it! Being stuck in the house is no excuse to miss exercise and eat poorly.
I also keep my own personal blog where I record videos of what I’m up to and share my weight loss goals and struggles. I find it helps keep me accountable. I’m very camera shy but I feel putting my face out there for everyone to see helps keep me on track.
Thanks for sharing your post! I look forward to following you. :)

December 10th 2009I cook and knit when I am stuck inside the house. We just got the edge of the bad weather this time. Only 6 inches to shovel!

December 10th 2009Hi Joanna! When I have cabin fever (which occurs quite frequently in winter!), I get suited up in layer after layer, no matter how cold it is, and take the dogs out for a stroll. Usually once I get moving, it’s not that bad. And sometimes you just HAVE to have a little fresh air!
Melissa says:
December 10th 2009I hear you sista! This is my first day in the actual NuVal office all week. My daughter is running a temp and yesterday I had the migraine from hell. Gym rats like us get a little stir-crazy when inside for too long. Great workout!
Katrina says:
December 10th 2009I cook, clean, pace, spend too much time on FB, listen to music and play with my kids. When I am desperate for exercise and need fresh air I walk or run laps around my yard. I am beginning to be able to see my path in the grass actually. To get in a workout inside I usually pop in a Pilates DVD.
Evan Thomas says:
December 10th 2009I remember last winter when I couldn’t get out of the house I walked up and down the stairs for a good exercise. I’d turn up the tv in the other room and just do that–30 minutes was killer on the legs!
Trainerpack says:
December 10th 2009Doing something is better than nothing even if its 5 mins as long as your heart is going. The beauty of working out at home is that you don’t need to get dressed for the gym, no travel time and you can do anything you want! =)
Feel free to try this free workout that i designed for home: http://www.trainerpack.com/content/workouts/workouts.php?wid=5001
Tami Boehmer says:
December 10th 2009Actually getting on the computer helps with cabin fever for me. I get on Facebook, post on my blog and check my emails so I don’t feel so isolated from people. I get on the elipitical machine in our basement if I can’t get outside. We live really close to a mall and if it’s too nasty out, we’ll walk around there. It’s bright, interessting and people are around.
Yum Yucky says:
December 10th 2009I love cabin fever! Let’s light the fireplace and put on a good movie after we get done shoveling the driveway…and the neighbors…and the lady’s down the street. Because shoveling snow is a great workout!
Heck, one time I shoveled part of the street before the snow scraper trucks got there!
Christine says:
December 10th 2009Cabin fever, eh? Usually involves me running in circles around the house until my energy is expelled (or I get nauseated from all the circles, whichever comes first), then involves me talking to our dog. Either way, getting rid of energy and talking to someone, whether human or animal, really helps! So, exercise and socializing are CRUCIAL to curing cabin fever.
Though I do not advocate talking to inanimate objects, that’s just weird
debby says:
December 10th 2009Man, I still have cabin fever–4 days and counting. I hope to be able to ‘escape’ this afternoon to get to the gym for a workout, but the real reason will be to be able to take a shower–still no water even tho the power turned on last night…
Those valslides look great and would have added to the ‘home exercise’ I could do while stuck here!

Cathy Buchanan says:
December 11th 2009When it is just so cold or snowy to go outside for my usual walking I will get out my resistance bands and do my workout with those. Or if I just need to warm up I will jump on the recumbent bike for 30 minutes or so. In no time at all I am not cold anymore. Then when all of that is done I sew or knit. Mostly sewing during the day and knitting at night. I make purses that you can see if you are a Fast Track for Fat Loss member on my profile page. Right now I am making things to wear for friends and relatives. Keeps me busy and out of the refrigerator.
