Don’t Just Show Up

“No matter how you feel, you need to get up, dress up and show up.” n520233850_1380956_5323

I keep seeing this quote and it kind of bugs me. I get that some days we just won’t feel like jumping out of bed and go to school, work, or workout…like on a cold Monday morning after a long weekend, for example. Like TODAY for example.

But, geez…the part about just showing up? That’s the part that just rubs me the wrong way.

Granted, I am guilty of just showing up to the gym for about the last two weeks of 2009. Sure, I worked out but I was just going through the motions. I told myself “it’s better than nothing.” ENOUGH! It’s time for some tough love. I think if we just show up we’re just taking up space.

This year I’m not just going to “show up” to anything I do. I’m going to…

“Go big or go home!”

Now I really must go “show up” some boys at the gym! (Happy New Year!)

I had a “if you wanna run with the big dogs you need to get yer glutes off the porch” moment this weekend….and you are so right.

I need to get my glutes off the porch (which isnt to say I wont email you whining a little bit about the scariness of the big dogs or the fact that my glutes waaay prefer the porch :))

AHHH I SO AGREE WITH THIS!!! If you are going to work out, then give it your all!

YES! Great attitude. I agree, that quote is a good one, but why would it say, “just show up”? Id rather stay at home than just show up…. I think you’re on the right track, and I hope you showed up those gym boys! I’m sure you did :)

Thanks for the re-tweet, by the way!

I too am guilty of going through the motions the past few weeks… just happy that I got a work out in that day. I need to give it my all!!

So true! That’s the problem when I work out at home. I slack off and “just show up.” When I’m at the gym I feel like I’m paying for it so I may as well work out hard. Oh, and I’m totally with you on the whole days off = sluggish Monday. I’m feeling right about now.

Too often I just “show up” at the gym. That’s something that I hope to change this year!

LOVE this post.  Showing up is not the only thing…I agree with you that sometimes it’s just what needs to be done, but showing up is only 1/4 of the battle.  The other 3/4 is the part that can make or break you (especially at the gym.)  I will commit to GO BIG OR GO HOME this new year, right along with you!!

Joanna,
Woohoo! And a great message – just going through the motions…isn’t really getting us anywhere. Go get ‘em at the gym! Well…as long as it’s not me!!!!

Rock on Joanna!

Love this idea – just showing up may be the first step but its not enough!!

This is 100% true! Why bother walking (shuffling) up and down the road for 30 minutes when you can fly and burn calories, and build muscle!!

I love that! I will remind myself of this post at the gym tomorrow! And that image cracked me up – I soooo looked like that this morning :D

I read somewhere that you should always go to the gym when you don’t feel like it. Do about 10 mins of some cardio and if you really aren’t feeling it at all and wanna go you should. However normally what should happen is you will wanna stay and finish out your workout

I love this! I think the “just show up” thing gets a little too much credit. If you show up and half ass something is it worth it? Not really. If you are going to do something then really DO IT.

I absolutely love this “Go Big or Go Home!” Just showing up really doesn’t get us anywhere! I hope the boys at the gym survived. ;)

Lately, I’ve been more in the “just show up” mode. I must get into the “go big” mode… STAT!!!
