Sunday School

IMG_7150Patience is not one of my virtues and neither is knitting. My grandmother, and now my mother, have patiently taught me the art of knitting. I am still a bit knitting-challenged despite their best efforts.

I can now knit a mean scarf and a mean dish cloth. And by “mean” I mean I cannot knit a perfect square or rectangle, in fact, I don’t think there are words in a geometry textbook to describe the shapes of most of my creations.

Like my knitting, I am learning to be patient with my body transformation goals. Losing body fat, gaining strength, or increasing speed takes consistency, hard work, and patience. The goals I set on January 1st are not going to be accomplished by next week or even next month (and at this rate, neither will my scarf). But, I know the time and the energy I put into to it will be worth the effort.

Now I really must go get back to work on my blob, I mean, scarf because I am not a knitter quitter!

Joanna,
And that scarf will come in mighty handy on cold winter days. Or…you could wear it to the gym! Well, except everyone you would see would want one, and then you would spend all your time knitting even more of these!

Consistency…a great place for me to focus as I re-focus on my fitness goals too…

knitting and croche! grandma taught me, too. but now I forget from not using it, like a muscle shriveled from non-use.

Having patience is one of life’s biggest challenges! I imagine you could come up with something creative for your master piece. Let us know what the end product is!

What a great comparison! Patience is one thing I am constantly working on!

I wish I could knit! It just sounds so cool ;)

I lack patience BIG TIME. As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to be a bit more patient, but I really have lacked it my entire life!

I love to crochet or french knit…maybe I should do some of that too!! :) I love the pompom yarn…though think that would be a nightmare to work with LOL

Ah, patience is a tough one for me, too! I like your analogy!

I would love to learn how to knit. People give me gifts that they have knitted, like scarves or pot holders, and I’m always so impressed. I think, like you said, it will help me relax and be more patient. Maybe my lack of relaxation is what has prevented me from knitting in the first place? Perhaps. Either way, along with learning Spanish again, I’d love to learn how to knit! I want to knit a MEAN scarf for myself :)

Attention to the little things. In both knitting and fitness this is the road to success.

In knitting the # of stitches in a row keeps it straight (if it is insteaded to be); in fitness, the number of sets, reps, calories or carb grams is going to keep you on the straight path.

So many infomercials and ads would have us believe that weight loss, fitness, or body sculpting can be quick and easy when nothing could be further from the truth! You are so spot on, the hard thing to do and the right thing to do are usually the same. But how rewarding is something that’s quick and painless?? (well except the lottery, wouldn’t mind a quick and painless deposit of $100 million in my bank account).

Carolyn McMahon just challenged me and several friends to knit or crochet caps for preemies. Some of the poor babies’ heads are no bigger than a plum and there are many hospitals that want these (including one in Omaha). The patterns look pretty easy and it would be a neat thing for you to practice on if you’re interested. http://www.carewear.org/patterns/knit/knit.cfm?pid=_p10_basic_knit_hat.cfm

Your mom knows how to reach me if you want more information. Lois
