I think I will feel better if I get this off my chest:
JUST BECAUSE YOU WENT TO THE GYM DOES NOT MEAN YOU WORKED OUT!
Going to the gym is one thing. Actually working out is another. Am I right or am I right?
Sure, I get that some days you’re just not going to be into your workout, but when you’re consistently slacking off and you are constantly complaining about your lack of progress, that’s another story. Here are 6 signs you probably could have worked out a little harder when you went to the gym. For example…
You might not have worked out if…
- Your jaw moved more than your body
- You spent more time in the locker room or shower than in the gym
- You spent more time watching me workout than working out yourself
- You read a book while you worked out. I’m going easy on all of you who can read magazines because SOME of you look like you’re actually getting a workout…I’m just jealous because I simply cannot multi-task when I do cardio
- You talked on your cell phone while lifting weights
- Your legs were moving on the elliptical machine but you didn’t even turn the sucker on
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt when I see them doing anything on this list, because I’m nice like that. For instance, I sometimes think positive things like:
- “Good for them for just being here!”
- “Maybe they’re recovering from an injury and they’re just getting back into the swing of things!”
- “Maybe they ran a marathon yesterday and they are taking a break from their training!”
And other times I think, “Save your money, you can take up space at home!”
End rant.
Now I really must go get off my soap box and go WORKOUT!

March 3rd 2010Wow – talking on the your cell phone while you lift weights??? Now that takes some serious talent.
Miz says:
March 3rd 2010uh oh. I sometimes resemble some of these :)
Yum Yucky says:
March 3rd 2010Jabber jaw-ers get on my nerves, no matter where they are. But in the gym must be extra annoying.
Jessica@HowSweet says:
March 3rd 2010I love the people at the gym who hog a machine because they are TALKING. Drives me batty.
Trish @IamSucceeding says:
March 3rd 2010This is actually why I stopped going to Curves…other woman would not be quiet and let me concentrate…was more of a social occasion for them…me I just wanted to work out and go home feeling good about what I accomplished!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says:
March 3rd 2010Oh my gosh…yesterday, at our gym, there was an older man (maybe 50?) standing (JUST standing, not moving) on the elliptical, talking to his friend in a BOOMING voice for about 15 minutes. It drove me CRAZY– I had to go do weights because I was getting so worked up inside!
The Candid RD says:
March 3rd 2010In college my roommates weren’t allowed to come to the gym with me because they would ALWAYS distract me!! They would talk, talk, and then talk some more. I couldn’t stand it. I never got anything done when they came. When they walked on the track, they would walk slower than molases. I felt bad, but when they stopped coming with me my workouts were so much faster and more productive!!
Jess (Fit Chick in the City) says:
March 3rd 2010I can’t stand it when I see people reading books while working out! Seriously, if the pages aren’t jumping up and down then your not working hard enough! A few weeks ago a woman in the gym actually asked me to turn down the music so she could read her book while on the stairmaster. I really want to to respond “this is not a library!”
April says:
March 3rd 2010LOL! Great post! That’s why I don’t go to a gym but have a home one. People annoy me.
Jody - Fit at 52 says:
March 3rd 2010I hear you on all of these! I don’t get the reading. I sweat so much that reading would be impossible.. the ink would be smudged to the point of no return! Plus I do work out pretty hard & I doubt I could even concentrate on what I was reading!
Yesterday, I watched a guy spend more time walking the gym & looking at himself in the mirror than doing anything else! He was “supposedly” taking his rest in between sets BUT it was more like a lovefest with himself.. & for no reason really PLUS the weights were not heavy enough for 5 minute rest in between sets!
Andrea@WellnessNotes says:
March 3rd 2010So true! And I have to often remind myself to get to work(out) already when I’m at the gym…. :)
Linda says:
March 3rd 2010Bravo girl! Well said…and oh so true. I figure if I’ve actually gotten myself up and dressed I’m certainly not wasting that by not ‘getting it done’!
Matthew Feerhusen says:
March 3rd 2010LOL, Very funny! I am happy to say that I don’t know what you are talking about! That must be why I am in such good shape!?
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says:
March 3rd 2010I beg to differ about being able to read a book and get in a good workout! It can be done. I can’t stand when people’s legs swing round and round on the elliptical at 100 miles an hour. People, that is not the point! Put some resistance on the machine!
Heather (Wheres the Beach) says:
March 3rd 2010Love it!
Courtney says:
March 3rd 2010Amen! Yesterday a woman “tried out” a few treadmills before she finally just walked around with her water bottle, which probably got more of a workout than she did. Then as I was getting ready to leave, she was complaining because she was “sweating.” Really? I must have missed that.
carrie says:
March 3rd 2010funny, i would have thot you were a multitasker. you learn something new every day.
Jamie says:
March 3rd 2010I love it when you are right! I went to the gym today and I worked out! 1 hour of free weights and an hour on the stationary bike (Level 16 and 60 rpm for your information) Joanna you make me laugh because I did see about 5 people who were “at the gym” and didn’t do squat! have a great day! :)
Jodi (jodiojo) says:
March 3rd 2010Bwhahaha!! LOVE this! Needed this today…;o)
Amanda Thebe @ foxyburd says:
March 3rd 2010you sound like me, I am forever looking at people reading their magazines wondering what they hope to achieve from their workout session – but maybe you are right in stating that they may just want some escapism, to get away from the humdrum of everyday life (for me personally I would rather hang out in Starbucks!! ha ha) My other fav is to see the meatheads who go at 9pm (sometimes I do) who spend more time straightening their bandanas or strutting in front of the mirror – look how big my muscles are…….
amanda says:
March 3rd 2010I think cell phone talking should be banned in gyms. It is a huge pet peeve of mine. Workout or go home!
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says:
March 3rd 2010People who talk on the phone during any exercise drive me nutso. I don’t want to have to blast my music and force myself to go deaf because you’re gabbing about last night to your friends. And I always thought it was funny in college when these “macho” guys would work out. They’d do more wandering, chit chatting, and talking to girls than they did working out. What a waste of time. The one thing I’m self-conscious about is with cardio I don’t push myself super hard because of my knee injuries. I always wonder if people are thinking, “Is that the best you’ve got?” My lungs and heart say no. My knees say hell yes.
Naomi(onefitfoodie) says:
March 3rd 2010I really cant stand poeple who talk on their cell phones on a cardio machine. If they can have an easy breezy convo, then they obv are NOT working hard enough orworking at all!!
Lauren @ Team Giles says:
March 4th 2010I LOVE THIS POST!!! I get so irritated when I see people at the gym just “hangin’ out” I mean, c’mon, work out people!
