The End of the 5 Second Rule

I was watching the Today Show last week when a segment came on warning us about the hidden dangers of picnics.

It must have been a slow news day because between you and me, I don’t know anyone on the planet that isn’t aware of what can happen when food swimming in mayo sits in the sun for hours…

But then this ground breaking news came on about the 5 second rule that captured my attention…

GASP! Not only is the verdict finally in on the 5 second rule, but now we have the answer to what we do when life (or a waiter) gives us lemons…we send them back!

Now I really must go make some fresh lemonade, mop the floor, and toss the salad!

I have always laughed at the five second rule—and not in a nice way :)
if I like it.
if I wanna eat it.
Ill pick it up and cram back in piehole no matter how long it lolled about on floor.

Im kinda…yucky that way :)

eek! Scary stuff. My husband has a 10 minute rule, haha. Not sanitary at all!

I guess I need to change my 1 hour rule.

I’m a germaphobe so no five-second rule for me. I may change my mind when I have kids and they drop everything they eat. I hear parents start to think, Oh whatever.

Wait! Stop and think! How many times have you dropped something then picked it up and ate it? Probably millions of times. And how many times have you gotten sick? Probably never!! There is bacteria everywhere but it won’t all kill you. Use your own life experience and common sense when deciding which rules are truly important and which are alarmist.

I saw that segment… I am not such a true follower but it all depends….

They actually did a segment on Myth Busters about the 5 second rule. Personally, if it’s a morsel that I was dying to eat, I eat it. Period. ;-)

As long as it doesn’t drop in the bathroom or in a puddle, and if I want to eat it..than I will.

Lol…I am SO lax about the five second rule. If I want to eat something off of the floor…I do it :-)

Whatever doesn’t kill me makes me stronger :P. Although the shoes from Penn Station being on your kitchen floor does make me think twice…for half of a second anyways!

Ewwwwww! We have a rule in our house, shoes off at the door..hawaiian style. I always check the fallen food for citters before eating. I usually skip reusing cheese. :)

Ya I saw that episode on myth busters as well. I try to keep away bad germs that CAN make you sick caused from sick people (like on shopping carts, at the playground where sick kids are out playing, airplanes… ugh airplanes!) but as far as dirt and stuff I’m not too worried. We have a no shoes rule in our house so we just get peoples stinky sock germs off our floor LOL. My youngest eats ANYTHING she finds on the ground so we do have to be careful and try to keep things and sanitary as possible lol.
As for the 5 second rule, we generally just use common sense, where are we (in a public place there is no 5 second rule) in someones house… maybe! haha
Great artical tho, does make people more aware.

Sound advice, but another good rule of thumb is to drink lots of alcohol which is known to kill things, (germs, bacteria — and brain cells).

Ugh, I’d like to think I’d stop using the “5 second” rule but no matter what I usually just go for it.  Gross I know.

I’ve heard that about lemons, but I really do like a twist in my drinks so I ignore it

FatFighterTV says:

But my kitchen floor is uber clean. :) And lemons in restaurants totally gross me out, too. I never put the lemon in the water glass – I just squeeze the juice and toss it, but now, I may need to stop altogether. So gross.
