Dear Girl Scouts of America,
I love your Thin Mint cookies…both sleeves of them.
And I love seeing your sweet little scouts parading my neighborhood in hopes of earning money, badges, confidence, and all that jazz as they pedal their cookies.
But…
I do have one question.
Why did you pick the month of January to sell Girl Scout cookies?
January has two strikes against it:
- 1. It’s cold in many parts of the U.S. (including Atlanta this year) and the Girl Scout uniforms don’t look all that warm.
- 2. January marks the launch of 97.24%* of diets in the world.
*A totally made up and rather exaggerated statistic used in order to make my point.
My point? I think you’d sell even more cookies if you picked another month…May I suggest September?
Just some food for thought.
Sincerely,
Cookie Monster Joanna Sutter
Now I really must go make room in my freezer for all those cookies and if there are any left I’ll share them with you…scouts honor!

Donna says:
January 11th 2011Oh so true. And for the record, the official start for cookie sales here is Friday, January 14. Just in case you want to buy some from my daughter & put them in your freezer until September. (I know – mine wouldn’t make it that long either.)
Fit Chick in the City says:
January 11th 2011Is it Girl Scout cookie season already?
Debbie says:
January 11th 2011You are so right on!! What is the deal with that??? You tell’m Joanna the diet point makes so much sense!! Sell them in October so you can share at the Thanksgiving feast by then the diets have fallen by the way side and everyones waiting for January to start a new!!
Carrie Symes says:
January 11th 2011Thin Mints? Where? I also don’t think this is a good time of the year either, but ya gotta love em!
Evan Thomas says:
January 11th 2011Those little demons are the world’s best sellers. My mom a few night’s ago said “So, I’ve already bought 6 boxes of girl scout cookies, which is a lot considering we don’t eat them.” Ugh. What the hell are we going to do with those?! I can’t even eat wheat. Ok, rant over.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says:
January 11th 2011Lol…so true.
Jody - Fit at 53 says:
January 11th 2011Lucky for me I can’t afford them anymore! ;-)
Kerri O says:
January 11th 2011OH, I always feel so GUILTY when I say no thank you. But the chocolate ones with the peanut butter inside…I’ll eat the whole box. Sigh. September sounds nice…that is until September gets here ;)
Bev Segall says:
January 11th 2011The reason for selling Girl Scout Cookies in January is because Sept. would be way too hot
for all the chocolate varieties that we sell. I am a Girl Scout Volunteer and was a Troop Leader
with my daughter for years. Yes, sometimes even in Jan., Feb. time frame it can be cold in
Florida too! We had to bundle up several years. Most of the country is warm in Sept.
and the chocolate could melt especially sitting out for a booth or in car.
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says:

January 11th 2011thanks for the heads up that it’s time to avoid the cute girls. the key: don’t make eye contact! pretend like you’re on the phone on a very important call!
Jennifer @ shesafitchick says:
January 11th 2011Wow, I never realized they started this early but that really is poor planning on their part!
The Candid RD says:
January 11th 2011AMEN! So strange, right?! It’s almost like the Girl Scouts KNOW that people are more vulnerable during this time, because they are so “deprived” and then they just HAVE to give in!! hehe, skeaky.
I just say, no thanks :) Well, to all those besides my nieces!
