Physiologically it is the a$$ to grass (full depth) barbell back squat. There is absolutely no other exercise on the planet that creates the muscular, neurological and hormonal response that this does. However, it does require a good base condition to actually be able to perform it correctly and safely. I'd recommend consulting a real trainer (by that I mean someone who has multiple qualifications, many years experience and has several high performance athletes under their guidance).

Darn it, why arent' I getting your posts into my mail box these days!? I miss them!

OK Hmm.. Gosh...I'd have to agree on the burpee pushup but would probably sneak a squat in there too- perhaps even a deep squat :-) So I guess I'll have to read the article to find out what the consensus was...or was it just to get people talkng?

I posted on this same NYTimes magazine article because I found the article very interesting. I had to really think about what is THE best exercise for me. I think it's hill running. I really love running. I don't love hills, but I do love the way I feel after I've conquered them.

I DESPISE burpees. We had to do them all the time in a boot camp class I took a couple of years ago. I will not do them again. Ever. But I do agree - there is no one best exercise for everyone. And did I mention that I do not like burpees???

Love bur pees with the added push-up! I'd have to say I prefer kettle bell snatches, good for the bum, abs, back, shoulders, & gets your heart rate up too! Hard to pick just one fav cuz there are sooooo many very good & effective exercises out there.

The deadlift for strength exercise. Everyone needs to pick things up off the floor sometimes. Squats are close because people need to be able to get up/down from chairs or the toilet without having to use their arms.

I would choose deep squats with weight. If you break parallel then you are using all of your core, hips, and legs. It is just a great all over exercise.

I would say the exercise that you will do too but now that you mention burpees with the push-up in there - yes, overall body workout. & you have the plank position in there too. I variation to add is one I saw on Biggest Loser is when you push the feet out into that plank position before coming back - jump both feet out to either said like a jumping jack with the feet but in that plank position & the continue on to finish the burpee!

Burpees are so hard!!! I feel like such a big, old dork when I try them! LOL! I guess practice makes perfect ?? :)
The best exercise for me seems to be running outdoors. It's a good mix of mind and body exercise for me!
