I Don’t Mean to Bragg

IMG_8283I am nuts about Bragg’s Liquid Aminos.

I use it in place of other soy sauces in stir-fry’s and now to add some amazing flavor to natural almonds without adding calories. Here’s how you make…

Almonds You’ll Bragg About

In a bowl stir together the Bragg’s, salt, and garlic or onion powder. Add in the almonds and stir until the liquid is absorbed into the almonds.

Roasting/Dehydrating options:

  • If you’re in a hurry, toss them on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 15-22 minutes. Stir half way.
  • If you’re into eating raw:
    • Toss the almonds onto a cookie sheet and bake at the lowest temperature with the oven door slightly ajar for about 2 hours
    • Toss the almonds into your dehydrator for about 2-3 hours

Eat these salty, savory almonds with salads, Asian dishes, or by the handful…or all three!

Now I really must go rehydrate before I go nuts!

iHerb, Do You?

I am one of those people that does my best to eat a balanced diet but I take a few supplements to make sure I’m getting all the nutrients I need. Therefore, I take things like a multi-vitamin, fish oil, and a greens supplement just about everyday. I’d take them everyday if I’d just remember to take my smart pills, as my mother would say!

If you read the “about” section of Fitness & Spice you will recall that I’m just your average Jo(anna). I am not a dietitian, a personal trainer, a rock star (ok, scratch that, I am a rock star), or a doctor…and I do not  play one on my blog. What I am is a healthy-living fanatic! That being said, these are my personal choices and I’d recommend talking to your doctor before adding supplements to your diet. [End disclaimer.]

When iHerb suggested I try out their Web site, I was intrigued by their description:

iHerb is an online company that is a reseller and we carry close to 18,000 natural products, including vitamins, herbal supplements, skincare products, grocery items and more.IMG_7325

They had me at natural products.

So I went on a mini-shopping spree compliments of iHerb. I was happy to find many of the brands I trust were offered on their site so I picked up my Source Naturals Multi-Vitamins, Carlson’s Fish Oil, and Greens Plus Wild Berry Burst.

When I go back to shop iHerb again, I’m picking up some more Bragg’s Liquid Aminos that I told you about last week and some NOW Guar Gum,  a natural thickening agent that turns things like my protein shakes into soft serve-like ice cream like magic!

If you want to start shopping at iHerb, too, I don’t blame you one bit. First time iHerb shoppers get $5 off their order when you enter SUT360 at checkout.

Want to WIN a $50 shopping spree at iHerb.com? Then simply use the word HERB in a sentence. Be sure to leave your enrty in the comments section by 11:59 P.M. EST on Wednesday, January 20. You can do it! Just take your smart pills!

Now this rock star really must go take my multi-vitamin, drink my protein shake, and hit the free weight room to lift a little heavy metal.

Wok This Way

My nutrition goal for the new year is to add more variety to my diet. I’m starting with vegetables.  IMG_7196

I eat a lot of vegetables but mostly spinach, broccoli, and green peppers. If only our environment were as green as my meals!

This week I have been mixing in a few sugar snap peas and an occasional carrot. Baby steps. But, as a result, I think my wok has gotten more use this year than my Magic Bullet! I love the simplicity and speed of stir-frying vegetables. Sure, you can get all fancy with a real recipe or just fire up the wok and make…

A Stir-Fry to Bragg About

  • 1 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Mixed vegetables
  • Shrimp or chicken (If you’re into that!)
  • Salt to taste
  • Braggs Liquid Aminos Seasoning to taste

Fire up your wok, add your EVOO, toss in your protein, and cook thoroughly. Add your vegetables to the wok and season with salt and Braggs, stirring continuously until your vegetables are cooked to your liking. Enjoy every bite.

It was April that first introduced me to Braggs Liquid Aminos All Purpose Seasoning. And when my coach, Krista, said Braggs was an approved seasoning for my nutrition plan I was thrilled! Bragg’s is a great alternative to soy sauce and, get this, it contains 16 amino acids!

The ingredients in Braggs? Just vegetable protein from soybeans and purified water. That’s it! It contains no preservatives, no alcohol, and no gluten. It does contain a bit of sodium so if you’re watching your intake go easy on the Braggs…just give your food a wind breaker, not a heavy coat. Besides, I think the wok has some sort of magical powers that results in some of the best tasting vegetables so there’s no need to overdose them with too many extra flavors.

Now I really could Bragg on and on, but it’s time for me to take a wok.
